Bout of Books 21: Progress post

Bout of Books

I will stick to having just the one post for progress this week, rather than one per day, I think, so this post will be updated as the week progresses.

Monday

Castle of Llyr pages 42-170 (128)
Taran Wanderer pages 3-44 (41)
Amulet #7: Firelight pages 1-198 (198)

Monday challenge

Another book-related thing happened today, namely the announcement of the Bokbloggerprisen 2017 (the book blogger price for Norwegian books published in 2017) longlist. None of my nominees made it (I’m most upset about Keeperen og havet), and I’ve actually read 0 of the books on the longlist. I’ve got one, Nesten menneske, on loan from the library and need to get to that soon. For the others I will probably wait for the shortlist to see which ones I should prioritize and join the readalongs (one book a month from February to August).

Tuesday

Goodnight Punpun pages 1-424 (424)
Pondus 1/2018  (comic magazine) 1-50 (50)
Taran Wanderer pages 44-218 (174)

Tuesday challenge

The Tuesday challenge is to sum up 2018 reading goals. In the Goodreads challenge I’ve set 70 books as a goal, which I’m well on the way to (10/70 already!), but I don’t expect to keep up this progress. In any case, exceeding that number is obviously just a bonus. I’ve also noted that I need to read more books with author AND plot from outside Europe/North America. More than in 2017 shouldn’t be too difficult, as I had a grand total of one dubious fit. In fact, since I finished Goodnight Punpun today I have already exceeded last year’s total… Still, I mean to read more.

As far as challenges go, I intend to make an attempt at the Bookriot Read Harder as well as the Swedish bloggers’ Kaosutmaningen. I’m also hoping to participate in Moshonista’s Biography reading circle (waiting for the 2018 prompts to be published) and may consider Boktankers Bokhyllelesing – reading shelf-warmers – again waiting for the 2018 prompts (the link is to the 2017 prompts).

Wednesday

The High King pages 3-106 (103)

The Wednesday challenge was a book spine rainbow. I finally got around to it on Friday:

Thursday

The High King pages 106-248 (142)

The Thursday challenge is called All the Favourites, and there are a few prompts to set us going, so here goes (I may add more as I think of them):

Audiobook narrator
I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I don’t normally pay that much attention to who the narrator is when I do, but the most memorable narration I’ve ever heard was David Suchet’s reading of Murder on the Orient Express, where he does (perfect!) voices for all the different characters.

Illustrator
Thore Hansen has been a favourite for as long as I can remember, but Lisa Aisato is becoming a major contender for the top spot.

Series
I’d have to go with the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian.

Bookish blog
One I’ve read for a long time and which continues to delight and inform me is the Swedish bookblog Enligt O.

Vlogger
I don’t do videos.

Favorite library (librarian)
I’ve never had a conscious relationship to specific librarians since I moved away from my childhood library, Hamar bibliotek. There were two female librarians – and no, I don’t remember their names – who worked (mostly) in the children’s/youth section who were helpful and gave good guidance, but also annoyed me because they were the face of the rule that you couldn’t take out books from the adult section before the age of 12 (I got around it by reading in the library, but it felt massively unfair). At the time I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up, so they were both important role models.

Friday

Så du ikke går deg bort pages 7-48 (41)

Saturday and Sunday

Så du ikke går deg bort pages 49-111 (63)

The weekend was a bit of a disaster, reading-wise. I had a photgraphy workshop on Saturday (some of the pictures I took can be seen here) and on Sunday we had a birthday party for the (newly-turned) eleven-year-old. But I did finish a Nobel Prize Winner, even if it was short, so there is that.

Totals for the week

Books finished

The Castle of Llyr, Chronicles of Prydain III – Lloyd Alexander
Amulet #7: Firelight – Kazu Kibiushi
Goodnight Punpun – Inio Asano
Taran Wanderer, Chronicles of Prydain IV – Lloyd Alexander
The High King, Chronicles of Prydain V – Lloyd Alexander
Så du ikke går deg bort – Patrick Modiano

Books blogged

Goodnight Punpun – Inio Asano
Vernon God Little – DBC Pierre (read prior to Bout of Books week)

Total number of pages read: 1364 (updated Friday)

And that’s pretty marvellous, considering I read all of 200 pages or so for Bout of Books 20 back in August, when my concentration levels should have been much better. This time around I managed almost 200 pages a day on average, even if almost half is comics/graphic novels that’s still over 100 pages of text a day, which is much more than I normally read (I just checked last year’s stats on Goodreads, and dividing the 17,924 pages they reckon I read by 365 I get 49 pages a day, and that number, too, includes a lot of comics/graphic novels).

AND I blogged about two books!

More importantly, perhaps: Fun was had.

Bout of Books will be back in May. So will I. Well, actually, I hope I’ll be blogging a bit between now and May, too, but you know what I mean.

Bout of Books 21

Bout of Books

Bout of Books is a pretty good way to kick off the bookish year, and the 21st Bout of Books is happening next week. Here’s the official blurb:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 8th and runs through Sunday, January 14th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 21 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

Apart from reading (a lot) I have every intention of blogging (a bit). We’ll see how it goes.

2017 End of Year Survey

A survey from The Perpetual Page Turner, who’s doing this for the 8th year running. I toyed with the idea of translating to Norwegian, but decided against it. I think I’d have more interesting answers if I were still at the series guzzling age (I used to read something like a book a day for years). Any questions I can’t think of answers to, I’ll just leave blank. Here goes:

2017 Reading Stats

Number Of Books You Read: 71
Number of Re-Reads: 34
Genre You Read The Most From: Children’s/YA Fantasy OR Maritime Fiction (the latter being all Patrick O’Brian, but 20 books is a hefty chunk out of 71)

Best in Books

1. Best Book You Read In 2017?

Best of the non-rereads was probably A Shepherd’s Life.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Bobla, unfortunately.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

Um sakne springe blome, as I couldn’t see what everyone was so VERY excited about at ALL.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

I was a pretty bad (i.e. innefficient) book pusher in 2017, books for the book circle and suggested to my daughter don’t really count, do they?

5. Best series you started in 2017? Best Sequel of 2017? Best Series Ender of 2017?

I have great faith that Keeperen og havet (which I’m reading at the moment) will be the best sequel published in 2017 that I’ll (ever?) read. As for the rest, it really is Master & Commander and Blue at the Mizzen, at least for the series I personally read in 2017…

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2017?

I really liked Vernon God Little, weird as it was, so hopefully D. B. C. Pierre has written more books.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

Arbeidsnever was pretty good for a collection of short stories (I do not like short stories).

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Apart from the whole Aubrey/Maturin thing? Percy Jackson was pretty hard to put down towards the end. I did go to bed and leave 50ish pages, so not impossible to put down, but it was a wrench.

9. Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

The Harry Potter series, since we’re seeing The Cursed Child at the end of January it seems necessary to prepare by rereading the original seven…

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

Bobla!

11. Most memorable character of 2017?

I’m going to cheat and say Carrie Fisher. I’ve never been much of a Star Wars fan so she hasn’t really been on my radar, but it was in 2017 I «discovered» her, and read Wishful Drinking. And now I want to read everything she ever wrote.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2017?

Ahem. It’s going to have to be O’Brian. All of them.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2017?

I can’t think of any that actually fit the bill, which is a bit sad. Some of the rereads were life-changing in ways when I first read them, but not so much the fifth and twentieth time around.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2017 to finally read?

I’ll go with Lars er LOL. I should have read it in 2016 so I could have nominated it for Bokbloggerprisen, I might have pushed it on to the shortlist if I had.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2017?

«Neither fowl nor fish nor good red herring». Said by Jack Aubrey at some point in the series. It’s one of my favourite expressions ever.

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2017?

Longest must surely be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Shortest might be Um sakne springe blome.

17. Book That Shocked You The Most

As with question 13, none this year.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

I’m not a shipper, really. I tend to be happy with letting the author ship for me.

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Yes, well, it’s going to be the friendship between Jack and Stephen, isn’t it?

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2017 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Discounting rereads, I liked John Green’s story in Let it Snow more than I liked the one other book of his that I’ve read, The Fault in our Stars.

21. Best Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

I liked Jane Ashlands gradvise forsvinning more than I expected to, and I’d never have read it if it wasn’t for Bokbloggerprisen.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2017?

23. Best 2017 debut you read?

I don’t think I read any.

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

Harry Potter all the way.

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

Tegnehanne: Blod, svette og tress-is.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2017?

I sob through the last 80 or so pages of Robin Hood every time.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?

Reinertsens biography of Henriette Schønberg Erken. More people should read it.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2017?

Vernon God Little.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

Your blogging/bookish life

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2017?

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2017?

Jeg elsker vaffel. Mostly because I’ve been meaning to write about cookbooks more for probably the last ten years.

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

Et forsøk på oversikt, which I just managed to cram in before the new year.

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

Bokbloggertreffet.

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2017?

Getting the last book in Bente Lohnes fantasy series for kids, Gullridderen, quite totally unexpected as a gift after it has been the one book I was missing from the series for years and I had more or less despaired of ever finding it.

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

Getting around to blogging. Still working on it. Reading a lot less than I would have liked and rereading a lot more than planned, both due to concentration problems caused by tiredness following chemo.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

Owlcrate Jr. I bought a three-month subscription for my eldest daughter for the summer months, she loved it and would definitely like a long-term subscription.

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

Not really, it was a bad year for challenges.

Looking ahead

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2017 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2018?

Already on it: Keeperen og havet.

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2018 (non-debut)?

3. 2018 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2018?

Anything from The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, whether novel or comic (graphic novel if you will).

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2018?

Blog about a larger proportion of the books I read. Read somewhat more new (to me) books rather than rereads. That’s two things.

6. A 2018 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable):

Not applicable.

Antall nye (for meg) bøker: 39
Antall gjenlesinger: 34
Antall tegneserier: 24
Antall bøker skrevet av (bare) damer: 21
Antall bøker skrevet av (bare) menn: 37 (O’Brian bidro tungt her)

Mitt år i bøker i følge Goodreads finnes her.

Readathon: Wrap-up

Well, it’s two o’clock here, so the 24 hours are up. From the point of view of reading the most number of pages, I should have stuck to YA or graphic novels or something. As it is, though, I continued my reread of Aubrey/Maturin, both from expediency and inclination, and as the hour struck I had finished the last 240 pages of Clarissa Oakes (being on page 16 when the readathon started) and 85 pages of The Wine-Dark Sea. 325 pages is far more than I normally read in 24 hours these days, so I call that a success. With breaks (some of them extended, like when I suddenly decided I HAD to make crackerbread to go with my cheese), I basically read for 13 hours (5 pm to near midnight and 9 am to 2 pm).

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Since I opted to sleep at my normal time, none, really.
2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!
Clarissa Oakes and The Wine-Dark Sea by Patrick O’Brian
3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?
I’d certainly recommend reading the whole Aubrey/Maturin oeuvre.
4. What’s a really rad thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you smile?
How about a mini-readalong? It would have to be something short, perhaps a two-three page short story, but wouldn’t it be fun if everyone read the same thing? (Says she who hates short stories…)
5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep?
If it falls on a convenient weekend, certainly I’d participate again. I might even make more of an effort to get closer to 24 hours of reading. It depends a lot on what the rest of the family is doing, however.

As for that crackerbread…

I used the recipe from Trines matblogg, which is similar to one I’ve got written down somewhere. Due to lack of supplies (it was, after all, because I couln’t get to the shops that I had to make it instead of just buying some), I made some substitutions, so my recipe went as follows:

3 dl wholemeal rye flour
1 dl rye meal
2 dl oatmeal
2 dl melon seeds
2 dl pumpkin seeds
2 dl sesame seeds
1 teasp salt
7.5 dl water

All mixed to a sticky «batter», divided on three baking sheets lined with paper and spread (inexpertly) with a spatula to an evenish 2-3 mm. All into the oven (hot air) at 160 degrees Celcius, cooked for ten minutes and then scored to mark rectangular crackers, then cooked for 4 times 15 minutes or thereabouts, circulating the baking sheets ever 15 minutes.

Break up along scored lines and cool on a rack, then eat.
