Have I ever mentioned

…how much I love e.e.cummings’ poetry?

I thought I might have. Well, it’s worth repeating. I mean, I love Shakespeare, I love Dorothy Parker, I even enjoy the occasional romantic, but the only poet who can give me the shivers (literally) from “mere” wordsmithery is e.e.cummings.

I just thought you ought to know.

Tidying

I’ve been doing some serious tidying today. Amongst other things I emptied the closet-cum-broomcupboard out completely and have been sorting through the contents. I have several big piles of “junk” now, some going in the garbage, some in the paper recycling receptacles and some to charity shops.

It feels good to have gotten this far, problem, of course, is I’m not done yet. At the moment it certainly doesn’t look like I’ve been tidying, it looks as if a bomb has hit the place (more so than usual). And on Saturday my parents are coming for dinner (there will be haggis. Mmmmm) and so I really need to get everything in order by then. Oh well, one more evening and most of Saturday to do it in, I guess.

Yesterday’s Monday Mission:

1. Those paper toilet seat covers in public bathrooms, do you use them?
Unless the toilet seems particularly unclean, no.

2. What is on your Christmas Wish List for Santa to bring?
See the Christmas wish list entry.

3. In the month of November, Brian wrote over 50,000 words on his novel and is nearing completion. What did you accomplish in the month of November?
Not much. That’s not a very good answer, is it? I wrote a demo version of a data import which, if successful, might be used by most of NATO one day – is that an accomplishment?

4. Have you ever snuck into someplace that you shouldn’t have? Tell me about that.
Probably. The only place I can think of right now is an old abandoned house that used to stand just across the road from my school (they’ve torn it down now). It was creepy, but I think we probably made it more creepy than it really was.

5. Do you recall the first internet meme you participated in? How did you come to find out about it? Do you still participate? Why or why not?
I think the Friday Five was the first one I did regularly, and still do. Someone who’s blog I read regularly, though I can’t remember who, had done it one week and I just sort of kept going with it. It’s a good one.

6. Do you have any favorite internet or “streaming” radio programs or music channels you wish were available in your car or on a portable radio?
Nope. Haven’t started using internet channels yet.

7. Ever been skinny dipping? What’s the story there?
Yep. Staying up at the cabin during summer the only way to wash is to go swimming in one of the nearby lakes or ponds – and you can’t really wash while wearing a swimsuit, now, can you?

Feeling pleased

I found the right drawer. And it was actually physical rather than digital – I had to get to the back of the cupboard to find my advent star and there, too, was a sheet of paper tucked away in a folder labelled “Dikt” (i.e. Poems). Reading through it again I find it’s better than I remembered it to be.

Utilities

We’ve had a bit of a troll on the nmwl pages since yesterday. Well, when I say “a bit of a troll” what I really mean is a troll, but a fairly toothless and not very scary one. It looked like it might get ugly for a while, but then the troll seems to have thought better of it.

In the meantime, the hullaballoo made me go looking for ip-tracing tools and I found this page. Their domain dossier gives me all the information I need and correctly located my ip from home which a few of the others I’ve tried have located as “Sweden” (which is disconcerting. When did we get annexed? Why has no one told me?).

Shopping!

A materialistic Friday Five:

1. Do you like to shop? Why or why not?
It depends fom what and when. I hate shopping for clothes, especially if I really need to find something (and especially trousers). I can spend hours (days, weeks) browsing in (second-hand) bookshops, though. I don’t like crowds and waiting, so the more busy a shop is the less likely am I to enjoy the experience. But, yes, if I can chose when and where to go shopping, I do like to shop…

2. What was the last thing you purchased?
LotR Two Towers extended edition with Gollum figurine and two cds on sale at Platekompaniet yesterday. Or, if you’re counting online shopping: The Anatomy of Bilbliomania by Holbrook Jackson – ordered through ABEBooks this morning.

3. Do you prefer shopping online or at an actual store? Why?
I prefer an actual store as long as it’s not too crowded. I shop a lot online, though, because a lot of what I want to buy is not that easy to get hold of in Oslo. A quick search online saves a lot of time and energy when you know exactly what you want. I tend to do my browsing-resulting-in-purchase in actual shops, and I don’t buy clothes/shoes online as I really need to try them on first.

4. Did you get an allowance as a child? How much was it?
Various amounts at various times. For years I got 10 kroner on Saturdays to buy sweets. Then, when I was 14 or so, my mother figured she’d teach me how to budget by giving me 500 kroner a month from which I was supposed to get my own clothes in addition to “fun” things. Which is when I developed my habit of buying clothes, especially expensive items like coats, in charity shops – leaving the rest of the money for more important things. Like books.

5. What was the last thing you regret purchasing?
Hm. Nothing very recent. I suppose I regret the couple of whisky bottles that I couldn’t carry back from Scotland and which were lost in the mail (grrrr) – but I don’t regret purchasing them so much as mailing them…
